Superb educational value |
I am a big fan of the Reader Rabbit educational software series. My daughter is currently five years old and she has come to love Reader Rabbit and Sam the Lion. These characters remain a familiar constant throughout the series. This three-CD set follows on nicely from previous Reader Rabbit packages aimed at younger children; the regular references back to tasks completed in that software help to build upon educational value already received. Reader Rabbit offers a very interractive form of education - in particular my daughter loves recording her voice as she reads the on-screen books available at each stage, and playing them back to herself. Having heard the pre-recorded story page-by-page she is able to match her inflections thereby improving her reading. Most importantly though, all the games are fun, and they get progressively more difficult as your child moves through the various levels. As a parent, I am able to keep track of how my child is coping with the tasks and I am able, in this version, to open up more games early if I choose to do so. The software saves the childs profile upon exit so we dont have to start from scratch next time. There are various touches which set the Reader Rabbit software apart from the rivals. For example, your child can click on any of the background sprites or set pieces and find that most produce some form of sound and animation - very cleverly all of these fit in with the educational value of that particular level. This is a set of software I feel comfortable leaving my daughter playing with while I go and do other things. I know that my daughter is learning, and that she is having fun, and that she isnt going to kill my PC! Remarkable stuff, and cheap at the price. I wish Id bought my copy from Amazon and Ive learned that for next time.

Good Value DVD/CD writer |
This device was bought principally to store large amounts of data economically particularly in terms of space. It (...) is the cheapest option (in the UK) by some margin for an external device capable of handling all types of DVD including DVD- RAM, as well, of course, as CDs. I have not, and do not plan to use it for video storage etc. and therefore cannot comment upon this aspect of its function. It is supplied with a cable for connection to a USB 2 port, a power cable, and appropriate software. It is a neat and apparently well-constructed device which sits comfortably on top of my base unit. My operating system is Windows XP, and it therefore needed no installation once connected. It functioned well from the word go in reading CDs and DVDs, and it worked well writing data and music CDs, but I encountered problems writing data DVDs with my pre-installed Easy CD Creator 6 Platinum, although Nero worked well. I was in communication with Roxio to resolve this issue but, in the meantime, solved it myself, principally by uninstalling Easy CD Creator 6 Platinum, installing Easy CD Creator 5 Basic, which is supplied with the device, and having discovered that this worked uninstalling it and reinstalling 6 Platinum. So far, having had the device for about one week I find it entirely satisfactory for the purpose for which it was supplied and I would recommend it to others looking for a similar piece of hardware.
